SNAP Challenge

What is the SNAP Challenge?

The SNAP Challenge encourages participants to experience a piece of what life can be like for millions of low-income Americans who struggle with hunger.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) is a federal program that feeds millions of hungry families in America every month. Here in Connecticut, the average SNAP benefit is $143 per person a month amounting to just $4.77 per day. By living on the average SNAP benefit, Challenge participants find themselves forced to make food choices on a limited budget. Participants will gain a greater understanding of how difficult it can be to avoid hunger, afford nutritious foods, and stay healthy without adequate resources.

We suggest taking the SNAP Challenge for one week, while some people choose to take the Challenge for the entire month of September as part of Hunger Action Month. Register Now!

Taking the SNAP Challenge

Step 1: Eat spending just $4.77 per day on food for a week or longer. You can find healthy, budget-friendly recipes at SNAP4CT.org.

Step 2: Reflect on your experience and the struggles you encounter while trying to avoid hunger.

Step 3: Track your spending, share your experience, and encourage your friends to participate!

  • Post to social media using #SNAPChallenge. Tag us @Foodshare on Facebook and Twitter and @FoodshareCT on Instagram.

  • Create a blog, write something for your town’s local Patch, or write letters to your policy makers in Washington D.C. Be sure to email us what you write so we can share it with our followers, too.
Participation Guidelines +
  • Each person should only spend $4.50 per day on food and drink.

  • All food purchased and eaten in this time must be counted in total spending - this includes dining out.

  • During this time, do not eat any food purchased prior to the start of the Challenge.

  • Whenever possible, avoid accepting free food from family, friends and coworkers since these opportunities are not always available to those in need.
Helpful Hints +
  • If you take the challenge for an extended period of time, you are encouraged to spend your overall budget in larger allotments - for example $31.50 per week, or $135 per month. Advance planning will help you maintain a much more well-balanced diet in the long term!

  • Get your children involved by sharing with them your reasons for participating, what you are eating during the Challenge and why you have chosen to take part. Please note: it is important that children receive all of the necessary nutrients for growing strong and healthy, so we do not support participation for younger children.

  • Get your family and friends involved by sharing your reasons for participating and what you are eating during the Challenge. Please Note: it is important that children receive all of the necessary nutrients for growing strong and healthy, so we do not support participation for younger children.
